Brand new Canon 1ds Mark 3

Just taken delivery of the new Canon 1 Ds mark III 22 mega pixel, top spec camera. If file size has ever been a problem, this is the machine to sort it, supplying 100mb Tiff files, these images can be blown up to billboard size and still remain uber high quality.

I have only used it for short time but already I’m very impressed. It’s much more evolved than my old 1Ds mark II, The buttons and controls are much better balanced and feel instantly right, in fact they are so good it just highlights how bad they are on the mark II.

This camera has a great big bright viewfinder, making composing a dream. AF is a bit zippier but maybe that’s just because my old camera is getting a little tired (it’s had a tough life, as Indiana Jones says " Its not the years, its the mileage") the LCD screen is very big and bright but not particularly accurate for exposure calculations.

The files from this camera do require a little bit of post production tweaking. However they do have lots of depth and tonal range - for general use this can be a bit of a pain, but when you take a belting image, you will not be disappointed.

The thing I most like about this camera is the “look” of the images, reminds me more of transparencies than the digital look, also the pictures just seem to pop out more than on other cameras. I should also mention that skin tone is smooth and accurate.

Overall, the Mark III is a good step forward, a dream to use and I’m pleased to have it in my armoury, although my credit card is still creaking under the pressure.
